This afternoon I met up with my daughter-in-law at my daughter’s house for coffee and donuts. Well tea for me. This was our annual meeting of the minds where we plot out our holiday festivities and food. We have a large family even though not everyone can make it for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. We will still have about 20 to 25 people for each holiday. Now with our laptops and iPad ready we start our planning.
There will be family coming in from out of town and staying over night. Sleepovers are so much fun. We will need to plan breakfasts and lunches. Omelets are always a family favorite. Sandwiches with a various assortment of deli meat and cheeses with fresh rolls from a local Italian bakery will suffice for lunch. For the past 5 years we’ve opted to deep fry our Thanksgiving turkey. I’ve already placed the order for the peanut oil. Since we have to cook 2 birds to feed our large crew, the guys start on it early. It may take a little longer, but the wait is worth it when you bite into the juicy meat. We set out hay bales around the outdoor fireplace for the guys and kids to sit while they wait on the turkey to cook.
We start out by making our lists and checking our cookbooks and Pinterest for new recipes to try. Soon all is forgotten when we get to chatting and get lost in the time. Before we know it an hour or two has passed. My grandchildren are home from school and keep peeking in wondering why we are laughing. They are also letting us know that they would like their afternoon snack now. At least we finished what we set out to accomplish today before it is time for us to leave.
